Learning At A Distance

Last Updated Aug 20, 2008 00:24 PM

Distributed Learning
There are many times when a student might want or need the flexibility to learn at a distance from the school. This type of learning is known as Distributed Learning. Distributed Learning can be offered online over the Internet, but also may include a variety of other delivery methods such as using paper-based or correspondence material, linking to live virtual classrooms or video technology and attending some in-school sessions. This school year approximately 27,000 students in BC are taking at least a part of their education in a distributed manner. One key feature of Distributed Learning is that students may be able to start school throughout the year.

E-learning Research Sites
There may also be instances where students in rural areas of the province want to take courses not offered at their school. By connecting classrooms to interactive technology, students have more choices.Eight BC school districts are currently offering this opportunity to students through their E-learning Research Sites.

Pedagogy of e-learning

One important point is to help teachers organize their pedagogical perspective. Some institutes for Higher education are devoted to this mission (training, counselling, funding, development, etc.). More recent approaches focus on dialogue, interaction and collaborative activities - courses still contain content but it is of secondary importance or is generated by the students. An open source course management system that makes this approach easier is Moodle.
