Kentucky's preschool education programs are available for all four-year-old children who are eligible for free lunch; all three and four-year-old children with developmental delays and disabilities, regardless of income; and other four-year-old children as placements are available. The preschool program is designed to be developmentally appropriate for young children. "Developmentally appropriate" is defined in law to mean that the program focuses on the child's physical, intellectual, social and emotional development, including interpersonal, intrapersonal, and socialization skills.

Early Childhood Standards
Kentucky's Early Childhood Standards represent specific learning standards for children birth through four years of age. These standards are designed as a framework to assist parents, early care and education professionals, administrators, and others in understanding what children are able to know and do from birth through four years of age.

Framework for Developing Early Childhood Standards-Based Units.
This framework will assist early childhood educators in developing instructional units that address Kentucky's Early Childhood Standards. Standards-based units allow for integration across content areas for a more comprehensive approach to meeting the instructional needs of young learners.
