No Child Left Behind Reforms

Pennsylvania, Mississippi Schools Lead by Example in Implementing No Child Left Behind Reforms

WASHINGTON, D.C. - House Education & the Workforce Committee Chairman John Boehner (R-OH) today praised local school leaders in Pennsylvania and Mississippi whose schools are leading by example in implementing the No Child Left Behind Act (H.R. 1), the education reform legislation signed into law by President Bush in January. The schools are among 75 nationwide participating voluntarily in the “Following the Leaders” project, an effort backed by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the Education Leaders Council (ELC) to facilitate the sharing of information among schools nationwide as they move to implement the No Child Left Behind reforms.

“We’re proud of what these schools are doing, and the example they’re setting for the rest of the nation. We’re behind them 100 percent as they work to ensure every child has the chance to learn,” Boehner said.

Rep. George Gekas (R-PA) joined with state and local officials Friday to raise the “Following the Leaders” flag over Camp Curtain Elementary School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Camp Curtain is one of 75 schools in six states to apply and be chosen for participation in the project.

"It will mean that we will better be able to follow the academic achievement of every child, pretty much every day, every week," Harrisburg City School District Superintendent Gerald Kohn told the Associated Press. Earlier this week, Rep. Roger Wicker (R-MS) and other leaders joined in raising the Following the Leaders flag over Mississippi’s Water Valley High School, also among the program’s 75 participating schools.

To ensure children are not slipping through federally-funded public schools without the skills they need to succeed, the No Child Left Behind Act calls for a new focus on accountability and results. The new focus comes along with unprecedented new resources and tools for teachers and parents, including funding, to help improve student achievement. No Child Left Behind also emphasizes local control, giving every local school district in America significant new freedom and flexibility in the use of federal education funds.
