Honey I Shrunk The Kids

Last Updated Aug 20, 2008 00:01 AM

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!

Answers for the Teacher

Were the kids able to meet their basic needs for food, water, shelter and space? How did they do that? Be sure to write about each of the four basic needs.
Food: Although the cookie satisfied the kids’ hunger, it would not be a healthy diet in the long run.

Water: The sprinklers provided water. But at one point, there was too much water and one kid almost drowned in the “lake” that was created. Also, at one point too much water pounded on the kids, creating dangerously slippery surfaces.

Shelter: The Lego and wormhole could have provided shelter. The Lego wasn’t deep enough to hide in and the wormhole contained predators.

Space: The backyard provided lots of space (perhaps too much!). To survive there, the kids had to find transportation and use their ingenuity. They did their best with what they had, but they probably couldn’t have survived in the backyard for very long.

Nicky, the youngest kid, says, “I don’t think we are part of the food chain anymore.” Do you agree with him or not? Support your answer.
Humans are used to being the eaters, not the eaten. The kids in the backyard were in a very strange position: They were at risk of being eaten by other animals. They were still part of the food web, but their place in the food web had changed dramatically.

What threatened the kids? What defenses or behavior did they use to stay alive?
The kids decided to stick together, run and hide, make a predator warning system, surround the predator to confuse it, cooperate with bigger animals and use weapons to attack.

Better Kids

What father or mother does not dream of a good life for his or her child? What parents would not wish to enhance the life of their kids, to make them better people, to help them live better lives? Such wishes and intentions guide much of what all parents do for and to their kids. To help our kids on their way and to make them strong in body and in mind, we feed and clothe them, see that they get rest, fresh air, and exercise, and take great pains regarding their education. Beyond ordinary schooling, we give them swimming and piano lessons, enroll them in Scouts or Little League, and help them acquire a variety of skills—art...

Building Effective Programs for kids for Summer Learning 1. Form partnerships with schools. Local public schools are where the neediest kids spend the rest of the year, and so can be very helpful in identifying and recruiting the children who need summer programs the most. Teachers, tutors, principals and counselors can all make recommendations about which students most need summer help, and can also serve as important links to children's parents, playing an important role in persuading them to have their children participate.
