School Waste Management Education

Last Updated Oct 5, 2008 09:34 PM

The California Integrated Waste Management Board believes that through education, current and future waste generators will respect and conserve natural resources by making informed waste prevention choices. To this end, the Board's school assistance program provides standards-based K-12 curriculum, and integrated waste management information and assistance for schools and districts. To keep up to date on these and other school assistance programs at the Board, bookmark the Environment Matters newsletter and refer to it quarterly. You can also subscribe to the EMatters listserv to be notified when the next issue is available.

With the passage of the School Diversion and Environmental Education Law (DEEL), formerly referred to as Senate Bill 373 (Torlakson, Chapter 926, Statutes of 2001), the Board has new responsibilities both in the education of California's children and assistance to school districts with respect to solid waste management programs. These mandates will help us to further our mission of assisting schools establish an integrated systems model where academics, administration, and facilities work collaboratively to incorporate resource conservation and sustainability into their organizational philosophy, planning, and implementation.

The CIWMB's Office of Education and the Environment (OEE), is coordinating efforts to implement the provisions of the new law. In addition, OEE works with local agencies to promote waste management education in local schools and informal settings, such as science centers and museums. The Board's Office of Local Assistance continues to assist school districts in developing waste reduction programs and addressing other solid waste management needs.

Visit the Cal/EPA Education Web site for information on other environmental education programs including topics of air, water, toxic substances, environmental health hazards and pesticides.
