May is Child Care Month

Every May, the provincial government — along with child care providers around the province — acknowledges Child Care Month. It is a time to recognize the importance of child care to families, and the exceptional work of child care givers in communities around our province. Everyone has a role to play in delivering child care. Each day, parents make child care choices for their families, and contribute to decision making with their providers. Children interact in healthy, nurturing environments. Caregivers receive training ...

Quality of Child Care

Study finds that Child Care Does Impact Mother-Child Interaction Quality of Child Care, Maternal Education, Maternal Depression and Child's Temperament Also Affect Mother-Child Bond (Washington, DC) - The more hours a child spends during the first three years of life in nonmaternal care the less positive the child's interactions with his/her mother, reports a new study, published in the November issue of Developmental Psychology published by the American Psychological Association. Child Care Quality

Does It Matter and Does It Need to be Improved? Child care has become the norm for young children in the United States. In 1995, 59 percent of children who were 5 years or younger were in nonparental care arrangements on a regular basis (Hofferth, Shauman, Henke, and West, 1998). This care typically began at early ages and lasted substantial hours: with 44 percent of infants under the age of 1 year were in nonparental care for an average of 31 hours a week. In the late preschool years, 84 percent of 4- to 5-year-olds were recorded as being in child care for an average of 28 hours per week. The use of nonparental care in the United States is expect...

Child Care and Developmental Outcomes 2

As is evident is Table 2, some of the available research focuses on relations between process quality measures and child behavior in the child-care setting. Other research considers relations between process quality and child behavior outside of child care. The former set of studies provide descriptions of children’s immediate reactions to caregiving experiences that are emotionally supportive and ...

How Is Child Care Quality Measured 2

Another commonly used process measure is the Caregiver Interaction Scale (Arnett, 1989) that rates teachers’ sensitivity during interactions with children. This 26-item measure yields three scores (sensitivity—warm, attentive, engaged; harshness—critical, punitive; detachment—low levels of interaction, interest, or supervision) which are combined to create an overall caregiver quality score. The ratings are made after two 45-minute observations conducted on two separate occasions by two separate observers. ...

Childcare and healthy eating

Childcare and healthy eating Some children can spend long periods of time in childcare. That means they eat a lot of their meals and snacks away from parental supervision. It's important that children in care eat nutritious meals and are educated about healthy food and diet. Research has shown that some children in care may not get enough of some important dietary nutrients. Childcare centres and carers should be familiar with hygiene and nutri...
