A Child Book of True Crime by Chloe Hooper

'Many 'true crimes' feature in this novel of exploitation, guilt and mental breakdown set in a small Tasmanian town near the site of a notorious penal colony. A young teacher is obsessed with a local murder because the victim's circumstances resemble her own. But is she actually in danger? And why can she relate only to children, rejecting the adult world? The author pushes the device of the unreliable narrator to its limits and produces 'an ocean of question marks'. This is ambitious first novel which, though it is stylistically brilliant, eventually seems to sink under the weight of its material.'

'Interesting idea with, in effect, three stories running together. This is well done and for most of the child book the momentum of the story kept me turning the pages. However, I found the end of the child book rather disappointing with the drama rather evaporated.'

Don't hesitate to choose a child book that may be suggested for someone older than the child you are selecting for. If a child book is beyond a child book reading ability, it can be read to...
