Child Book

Why Read to A Child Book?

Reading to a child book has substantial positive impact on his/her academic skills.

Children at the age of two to three who have been read to several times a day, did substantially better in kindergarten at the age of 4 and 5 than youngsters whose parents read (Child Book) to them a few times a week or less often. The group of children who were read (Child Book) to on a daily basis were 1.6 times as likely to be rated by their teachers as being near the top of their kindergarten class in learning skills, and 2.3 times as likely to be near the top of their class in communication skills. These relationships hold true regardless of the income of the child's household and the education of the child's mother.

Furthermore, children who had early exposure to child books and reading were also better at performing mathematical tasks. These children were twice as likely to be able to compare numbers, 2.6 times as likely to recognize geometric shapes, and twice as likely to know simple concepts of time when they are 4 and 5 years old and attending kindergarten compared to those who were read (Child Book) to less often. Again, this relationship was observed regardless of the income of the child's household and the education of the child's mother.

Parent Child Book Reading

Research on the benefits of joint parent-child book reding also underscores the importance of considering context (i.e., parent-child relationship) in which prescriptions for parenting are to be applied. There is strong evidence that parent-child reading is related to a number of child successes in learning to read (Bus, van IJzendoorn & Pellegrini, 1995). While these findings lend support to the wisdom of attempts to encourage joint parent-child book reading in family literacy programs, they nee...

Central Library Evening Readers

Child Books, Readers and Reading Central Library Evening Readers' Group A Child Book of True Crime by Chloe Hooper 'Many 'true crimes' feature in this novel of exploitation, guilt and mental breakdown set in a small Tasmanian town near the site of a notorious penal colony. A young teacher is obsessed with a local murder because the victim's circumstances resemble her own. But is she actually in danger? And why can she relate only to children, rejecting the adult world? The author pushes the device of the unreliable narrator to its limits and produces 'an ocean of question marks'. This is ambitious first novel which, though it is stylistically brilliant, eventually seems t...

Older Child Book

OLDER CHILDREN (AGES 9-12 AND OLDER) Consider who the child is--his or her personality traits and personal preferences. Make your selection with the child in mind; choose an informational child book or a novel in an area of specific interest. Publishers sometimes indicate on the cover of the child book or on a child book jacket the age level or grade level for which they think that child book is most suitable. Don't hesitate to choose a child book that may be suggested for someone older than the child you are selecting for. If a child book is beyond a child book reading ability, it can be r...
